Benefits of Using Specialty Alloys in Aircraft Construction

Many components in today’s aerospace industry are fabricated from specialty alloys or metals. They're called specialty materials because they have unique physical properties. These special properties make them lighter in weight and more resistant to stress, corrosion, and temperature.

Metal alloys are created by mixing and combining metal with other substances. Steel is one of the most common alloys used in aerospace construction. Steel is created by combining iron with carbon and other materials. Adding carbon to the iron improves its strength and resistance to fracture. Adding chromium to the mix improves its ability to resist corrosion and oxidation.

Examples of Specialty Alloys and Metals

Inconel
Inconel is a registered trademark name for a family of nickel-chromium-based superalloys. Inconel alloys are well suited for service in extreme pressure and heat environments.  It retains its strength over a wide temperature range and is also resistant to corrosion and oxidation.

Aermet 100
Aermet 100 alloy is an ultra-high-strength type of steel created from iron mixed with carbon, cobalt, nickel, chromium, and molybdenum. Its main advantages are its hardness, tensile strength, fracture resistance, and ductility. Aermet alloys are used in several military applications.

Magnesium Alloys
Magnesium alloys are mixtures of magnesium and other metals, including aluminum, zinc, copper, manganese, and zirconium. The benefits of using magnesium alloys include their low density, lightweight, good high-temperature mechanical properties, and superior corrosion resistance. Aerospace applications include aircraft engines and gearbox casings.
